Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
