Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, demons, and dark forces increasing in influence within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

Episode 3 concluded with a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of characters who will separate from the primary party to undertake their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table features the determined fighter (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Introduction, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

At first glance, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

First, the party has a clear idea where to proceed after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death initiated the story’s plot—manipulated the foes for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, striking the character, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants vengeance.
  • Kattigan has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a nasty location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their status as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the group access areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him everywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are hunted by the authorities that control the city for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The healer defied the influential house and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the family.

This results in them few options but to travel to the northern region in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Explorers and Strategists parties.

Audiences can expect discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on October 24.
